Frequently Asked Questions About Demand Response

Frequently Asked Questions About Demand Response

We’ve compiled the most common questions we receive from businesses considering demand response participation. If your question isn’t answered here, get in touch - we’re happy to help.

How much can we earn?

It depends on ability to adjust electricity consumption and what energy resources you have. Get in touch and we can do a quick assessment.

No penalties. This is a key benefit of working with Triple Edge Energy. We structure participation so you’re never penalised for opting out. Your revenue reflects what you actually deliver - there’s no downside risk.

What is demand response?

Demand response is when businesses voluntarily adjust their electricity usage during specific periods - typically when the grid is under strain. Instead of the grid relying solely on power stations to meet demand, businesses can help by temporarily reducing or shifting their energy consumption.

How does my business make money from this?

Grid operators pay for the flexibility your business provides. When you agree to reduce or shift your electricity usage during peak times, you’re providing a valuable service that helps balance the grid. Triple Edge Energy aggregates this flexibility from multiple businesses and sells it to grid operators. You receive your share of this revenue.

What equipment can participate?

Almost any controllable electrical load can potentially participate, including:

  • Manufacturing equipment with variable operating speeds
  • HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning)
  • Heat pumps
  • Refrigeration units
  • Battery storage systems
  • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure
  • Backup generators

The key is flexibility - if you can adjust when equipment runs without significantly impacting operations, it likely qualifies.

Is my business eligible?

If your business spends €75,000 or more per year on electricity, you’re a strong candidate. This typically means you have sufficient load to make participation worthwhile. Businesses in manufacturing, food processing, cold storage, data centres, and large commercial properties often qualify.

Will this disrupt my operations?

No. We work with you to understand your operational constraints before anything happens. You always have full control - you can opt out of any event that doesn’t suit your schedule. We design participation around your business, not the other way around.

Are there penalties if I can’t reduce usage during an event?

No penalties. This is a key benefit of working with Triple Edge Energy. We structure participation so you’re never penalised for opting out. Your revenue reflects what you actually deliver - there’s no downside risk.

What does Triple Edge Energy actually do?

We’re a demand response aggregator. This means we:

  1. Assess your site to identify flexible assets and if there is a meaningful return for participating.
  2. Onboard you to relevant programmes (handling all paperwork).
  3. Optimise when and how your flexibility is offered to the energy market.
  4. Coordinate with grid operators during events
  5. Report on your performance and revenue

You focus on running your business. We handle the complexity of the energy flexibility market.

How long does it take to get started?

Most businesses are fully onboarded within 1-2 weeks. This includes an initial assessment, site registration, and testing. Once set up, participation is largely hands-off.

Does this help with sustainability goals?

Yes. By reducing demand during peak times, you’re helping the grid rely less on fossil fuel “peaker” plants. This reduces carbon intensity and can contribute to your Scope 2 emissions reductions. Many businesses use participation as part of their sustainability reporting.

What if I already have solar panels or batteries?

Even better. On-site generation and storage can enhance your flexibility and potentially increase your revenue. We can incorporate these assets into your demand response strategy.

Who can benefit?

Anyone with a grid connection who has the ability to adjust electricity usage in a meaningful way. This can be achieved by smart management of distributed energy resources like onsite generation, storage batteries or high energy machinery. See resources for more detail on how this works

What Industry Sectors do you work with?

Any site with a grid connection between 50 to 500kVa Maximum Import Capacity.

Do we have to change electricity supplier?

No. This service can be provided independent of your electricity supplier.
